The title of this article about pasture mowers is a bit confusing; it can be referring to actual pasture mowing equipment, or it can be referring to pasture mowing companies. We will look at both of these options in this article, sharing our experience, more than two decades as one of the leading commercial pasture mowing service in the Greater Fort Worth area. We are Keith’s Tractor Mowing, and we invite you to call us with your questions or if you are looking for a commercial mowing bids.
Choosing among pasture mowers
Taking on a pasture, which is usually more than an acre in size, it is vital that you have the proper equipment. Lot mowing can be tedious and it can be dangerous, so choosing the proper tractor mowing equipment will save you many headaches.
Pastures are large. Using a push-mower is tedious and takes a very long time, literally hours for one acre. A good tractor mower, by contrast, can do up to fifteen acres in a matter of an hour or two.
Another consideration is the fact that pastures are uneven ground. Having the proper equipment with sturdy blades and brush hog capabilities/attachments is important. Typically, pasture mowing, or acreage mowing, equipment, has sharpened blades made of the highest quality steel. They have to have that or they would not be able to perform the job they are tasked with. At Keith’s Tractor Mowing, we use the John Deere 4320 for taller vegetation, and the TORO 5910 for finer mowing of shorter vegetation. We also have various attachment for specific jobs, depending on the contour of the land and any obstacles we might have to deal with.
Choosing a pasture mowing service
Usually this choice comes down to two factors:
- Cost
- Experience
Hiring a commercial mowing service will cost you money, but it does not have to empty your bank account. Commercial mowing bids are based on the time required to do any particular mowing job, and the distance traveled to get to the job site. The cost will also depend upon the area you live and the established price in that area. Generally speaking, you can plan on paying $75-$100 per hour for quality mowing.
This brings us back to the equipment question. At Keith’s Tractor Mowing, we can mow approximately sixteen acres in an hour, and hundreds of acres in a day, but that is because we are using quality, high-impact mowing equipment. Make sure you inquire about the equipment which will be used when hiring a commercial mowing company.
And make sure you check on the experience of the company. Ask for references, and follow up on those references. Check with the Better Business Bureau in your area. You are going to spend a good amount of money for this service, so it is worth the time it takes to check reference and business reputation. Bad news spreads quickly through a community; it will not take you long to find out if a company is good. Also, check with other farmers who have had their pastures mowed. You can usually come up with some strong recommendations that way.
