Choosing an acreage mowing company
Just like in any industry, there are good companies and bad companies in acreage mowing. There are fly-by-night companies, and there are reputable companies. Similarly, the prices charged for acreage mowing, lot mowing, or land clearing, are all over the board. So how do you choose?
If price is your only consideration, and quality is secondary at best, you don’t need this article. It is easy to find two guys with a thirty-year old tractor who will do the job for you “on the cheap.” Every city has them. They will offer to do your job for a ridiculously low price, undercutting the competition by hundreds of dollars. It won’t take you long to find them but remember this: in acreage mowing, you get what you pay for!
If your goal is to find a reputable company who will do a quality job, follow a couple simple recommendations.
Ask around
Check with churches and industrial areas and find out who does their acreage mowing. Check with airports and the city about commercial tractor mowing services. Check with cemeteries about their cemetery mowing contract. Get recommendations from people who have paid for these services in your area. The best gauge of a good company, or a bad one, is word of mouth comments. Good companies are bragged about by businesses and cities; bad companies are warned about.
Check with the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. It won’t take you long to gather up some recommendations. And check with each company you contact about liability insurance. A good tractor mowing company will carry at least a million dollars in liability insurance to make sure that the customer is protected in case damage should occur.
Once you have done your due diligence, made your phone calls, and gathered recommendations, make your decision based on the budget i.e. get the biggest bang for your buck. Sign a one-time only contract with that company. Find out how they do with their first cutting job, for you, before you consider an ongoing contract. Make them prove themselves before you commit.
