How to Cut Grass the Correct Way

cut grass

Is there a correct way to cut grass? Most of us learned from our parents, a time-honored lesson in responsibility, do your chores, cut the lawn, and then you can go play with your friends.  But did our parents ever tell us there was a right way to cut grass?

Thankfully, for you, Keith’s Tractor Mowing is here with the lesson your parents never gave you, the correct way for mowing a lawn.  Keith’s Tractor Mowing serves the Greater Fort Worth area with quality and affordable acreage mowing. When the job is too large for you to handle, call Keith’s Tractor Mowing.

And now, your mowing lesson.

Before you cut grass, check your equipment.

Mowing a lawn correctly begins with the equipment.  All lawn mowers are not the same, and all mower blades are not the same.  You want a mower with high rpms and you want a mower which has quality steel blades.  In addition, you need learn how to sharpen the blades of your mower, periodically, so you will continue to get a quality, precise, even cut.

Mowing steps to take.

Here, then, are the recommended steps to take when mowing a lawn.

Mow mid-morning or late afternoon.

Edge and trim your lawn first, then mow.

Mow in different directions each time you mow.  Go vertically one time, horizontally the next, and diagonally after that; then repeat those varying patterns.

Never cut too low. A general rule of thumb, using the 1/3rd rule.  Allow the grass to grow 50% higher than your desired length and then cut one-third of it off. This will prevent your lawn from burning in the hot sun and provide it with the nutrients it needs to grow properly.

Use a good mulching mower; the mulch will provide nutrients for your lawn.  We are not a fan of bagging up the cuttings and throwing them away.

Set a schedule and stick with it.  For a uniform cut, one you can be proud of, you need to cut your lawn on a regular basis.

Having said all that, if you are too busy to mow your lawn, hire it out.

If you hire out, get the job done correctly.

There is an abundance of commercial mowing services in most cities.  Who to hire? Who can you trust?

Perhaps you know someone who has a lawn service. If so, gather recommendations. Meet with each mowing company representative and go over the list of things you want them to do. Gather job quotes. In the end, choose the mowing company who you feel best about. The final decision will always boil down to a “gut feeling” about the representatives you have met.

Make your decision and then sign a short-term agreement.  Give it a month and see how they do. Once you are satisfied that they are reputable you can always sign a longer-term agreement.
