For the purposes of this article, we will define field mowing as any area larger than an acre.
The type of mowing done on that acreage will differ according to the use planned. If the field is being mowed for feed, as in a hay field, it will be cut to a certain length, requiring a certain level of expertise. If it is simply being cut back for appearances sake, that will require another skill set.
What can you expect to pay for field mowing?

Should you tackle field mowing yourself?
At the risk of sounding self-serving, our unequivocable answer is NO! Field mowing requires a large, tractor mower to be done correctly, and large tractor mowers require training and expertise. There are too many ways to injure yourself when operating heavy equipment, and saving a few dollars is simply not a good reason to risk an injury, one which could be crippling or deadly. And, if you are tempted to believe that last statement is hyperbole, check the statistics on accidents and deaths which happen yearly due to the improper use of heavy machinery. Trust us when we say it is not hyperbole at all.
How do you find a trustworthy lot mowing company? Ask around! Ask local farmers. Ask for references from the various companies and then follow up on those references. It will not take long for the cream to rise to the top during your inquiries. Word-of-mouth is a powerful advertising tool, but it is also very harmful for companies which do not do an outstanding job.
We know, the temptation is strong to rent a tractor mower and attempt to do it yourself, but in our professional opinion, it simply is not worth the risk.
