Now, though, let’s talk about the average commercial lawn mowing contracts.

What a commercial lawn maintenance contract looks like

What we can tell you is that very few commercial lawn care contracts look the same, and that is because of the term “lawn maintenance.” What exactly does “lawn maintenance” mean?  Does it simply mean mowing the lawn on a regular basis? Does it mean eliminating weeds in the lawn in addition to mowing it? Does it mean landscaping services in addition to mowing?

And, what are you looking for in lawn maintenance? What is your understanding of what a lawn maintenance company does?  What are you willing to pay for, and what can you do yourself?

Here is the first thing to be aware of: Not all lawn maintenance companies provide a contract. They should, but they don’t, and quite frankly you should demand one. Why? Because you, the customer, are the one paying the money, and you should know exactly what you are paying for.

Sit down with each company, spell out what you need, have them arrange for a commercial lawn care bids, and then do the same with the next company, and the next, and the next.  Once you have settled on an agreement you can live with, make sure that the final contract reflects your desires and accurately reflects the agreed upon price.  We are going to insist that you do this because, well, read the next section.

Beware of . . .

We are not sure how to say this without sounding like Chicken Little screaming about the sky falling, but the truth of the matter is, there are untrustworthy lawn maintenance companies in every city.  The truth of the matter is there is no regulatory agency making sure that these companies follow some set of good business standards.  With that in mind, property owners must make sure they are guarding against those companies with very little experience and lacking the skills necessary to perform excellent lawn maintenance.  This is, strictly speaking, a buyer beware industry.  Of course, you can complain to the Better Business Bureau if you get burned by a bad company, but that is after the fact, and it will cost you money to learn that lesson.

To quote my grandmother, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Take the time to adequately sift through the companies in your area. By doing so, and by calling references, and by demanding a contract, you will be in a position to accept that pound of cure.
