What is land clearing?
Land clearing is an important first step in a wide variety of different development projects, and something that you need to be able to count on for consistency and quality. But what, exactly, does land clearing entail?
There are three main levels of land clearing, listed below from easiest to most difficult:
- Lot mowing
- Brush hogging
- Tree removal
Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.
Lot Mowing
Lot mowing, or acreage mowing, is generally done with tractor mowing equipment. A tractor mower has sharper, tougher blades, enabling a good cut no matter what type of vegetation/grass is growing there. It also makes it possible to mow a large area in a short amount of time, often acres of land in an hour or less.
Brush hogging
Brush hogging is performed with a mowing attachment called a brush hog, or a bush hog. As the name suggests, this attachment, to the tractor, is used to cut down brush, bushes, and other semi-difficult vegetation which is growing on the property. Blackberry bushes, other berries, salal, small sapling, all can be handled by a brush hog.
Tree removal
The largest task in land clearing is the removal of large trees which are impediments to whatever development you have planned for your property. This involves the cutting of the tree, the safe limbing of the tree, and the removal of the stump of the tree. Chain saws, chains, tractors, and expertise are needed for this task to be done safely and efficiently.
Do all land clearing companies perform all of the tasks?
It is important to understand that not all land clearing companies perform all of these tasks. It would be unusual to find a land clearing company which does not do acreage mowing and brush hogging, but many do not do the tree removal, instead contracting with another specialized company to tackle tree removal. As a customer, you need to be aware of that when hiring a land clearing company. Do they contract out for certain services? How does that affect the price you will be paying? Can you trust in the work done by the contracted tree remover?
The bottom line is this: know exactly what your job entails, discuss it with the various land clearing companies, and find a level of comfort and trust with the company you do hire.
