Why use a large lawn tractor

Most of us have experience with gas-powered “push” mowers.  We have all, at one time or another, past or present, mowed a lawn using a mower we picked up at Home Depot or some other retailer.  These are perfectly acceptable pieces of machinery for small jobs. They can all handle residential lawns with ease, and you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks which will last you a number of years.

But there are mowing jobs which require something bigger and something stronger. We are talking about acreage mowing, lot mowing, mowing high grass, and land clearing. For those jobs, a “residential” mower simply does not have the power and does not have blades sharp enough to handle the job. For those jobs, you need a large lawn tractor, otherwise known as a tractor mower.

What to look for in a large lawn tractor

With large lawn tractor mowers, it’s all about power and blade sharpness.  Power refers to the number of gears available and the number of revolutions with those blades. Sharpness refers to the grade of steel used in producing the blades.  The better the steel, the better the cut.  The more gears and more power, the better the cut. It’s that simple.

In addition, tractor mowers have a wider cutting radius. Whereas a residential mower can only mow in an eighteen-inch swath, some tractor mowers can cut in ten-foot swaths or more, meaning it requires less passes on the property to complete the cut, which means less time spent cutting.

Cost vs convenience

And now we get down to the nitty-gritty of this discussion.  Tractor mowers are expensive. The smallest of these, the riding lawn mowers, can cost in the thousands. The large tractor mowers, like the ones we use at Keith’s Tractor Mowing, will cost in the tens-of-thousands of dollars.

What are you willing to spend to do the job yourself?  If you hire a tractor mowing services to do the job, you will pay, on average, $75 per hour for the mowing.  Are you willing to pay that hourly fee once a week, or once a month, or are you willing to pay $2,000, $5,000, or more for your own equipment?

We cannot answer that question for you.  You know your budget.  You know what you are willing to spend. All we can do is give you the facts, as we know them, based on our twenty-plus years of experience.

One other word to consider: large lawn tractors are considerably more dangerous to operate. The large, sharp blades, revolving at a very high rate of speed, can caused serious damage if extreme caution is not exercised.  Just keep that in mind as you make your decision.
