Whether you are looking at mowing high grass in an acreage mowing situation, or you are simply looking at tall grass at a residential home, there are some mistakes which you must avoid in order to have a safe experience and end up with a quality cut. This article will list those mistakes and provide you with some solutions.
We are Keith’s Tractor Mowing, serving the Greater Fort Worth area. Call us if you have acreage mowing in need of a professional cut, or brush hogging services for an overgrown area.
Mistakes to avoid
A quick list of the most important would include the following:
- Do not use inferior equipment
- Make sure you clear the area of obstructions before mowing
- Keep animals, vehicles, and people away from the cutting area
- If you are not confident or experienced in high grass mowing, hire a professional
Let’s look at each of these.
Inferior equipment
Regular lawn mowers, the residential types we all have used, are efficient in cutting grass up to, say, three or four inches in length. After that, grass any taller than that, and the mower quickly loses its efficiency. The reason for this is two-fold: the blades are not sharp enough, and the revolutions are not fast enough, to handle taller grass.
As a general rule of thumb, any vegetation over six inches in length should be cut with high-quality, professional-style tractor mowers.
Clear the area
Tall grass can conceal potential projectiles like rocks, sticks, pieces of metal, and the like. Walk the property to be mowed, picking up those potential problems before you mow. If not, you risk doing damage to the mower and to things, and people, around you.
Animals, vehicles, and people
This relates to the previous point. Before mowing tall grass, move animals, people, and vehicles away from the mowing area. Rocks can be thrown a hundred feet or more by powerful blades, and those rocks can do considerable damage, or harm, to anyone or anything they hit.
Lack of experience
We all want to believe we can handle anything that comes our way, but there comes a time when we have to admit we don’t know how to do everything. Commercial mowing services exist because normal people do not have the skills, or the equipment, to handle difficult and dangerous mowing jobs. Our word of advice, without sounding self-serving: pass the job of mowing high grass on to the professionals if you do not have the experience, or confidence, to do the job yourself.
