The steps involved with land clearing

Depending, of course, on the size and scope of the job, most land clearing will involve all, or part, of these tasks:

  • Site inspection
  • Removal of brush
  • Removal of stumps
  • Removal of trees
  • Hauling it all away
  • Perhaps site preparation?

Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.

Site inspection

Any land clearing job must begin wit a site inspection. Walk the property to be cleared. Get a feel for what it is like. Find the uneven ground. Find the potential danger spots.  Know where underground pipes are. Know where overhead wires are. This inspection could take an hour or more, but it is well-worth the time spent.

Brush removal

A brush hog, towed behind a tractor, can accomplish this feat in pretty quick order, or you can do it the old fashion way, with chain saw and chains and a whole lot of sweat equity invested.

Stumps removal

Not an easy job at all, removing stumps, but it can be accomplished with winches, chains, a towing vehicle, or a backhoe.

Tree removal

A chain saw and a whole lot of luck so the tree does not fall on any equipment or structures.  This is, perhaps, the most dangerous aspect of any land clearing job.

Haul it away

Load it all in a truck and haul it away, requiring, of course, the use of a truck and the ability to load some rather large pieces of wood into that truck.

What’s next?

Once the land is cleared, what’s next? Do you need to prepare the site for construction of some sort? If so, you will need machinery to press the soil down, smooth it, and level it. Will it be used for an access road? That will require some post-clearing work with a bulldozer.

Do it yourself?

The pioneers did it, so why not you?

We can think of a very good reason: safety!

We can think of another very good reason: your free time is important to you.

If those reasons are not important enough to sway you, by all means, do it yourself.  It is backbreaking, dirty work, but it can be done if you have the proper equipment and a certain level of expertise.

Hire land clearing companies to do the job?

Honestly, land clearing is a job best done by professional land clearing companies. They are trained to do it. They have the skills to do it safely.  A land clearing job which might take you weeks to do can be done, by professionals, in a matter of days, and it will be done safely and properly.  Yes, it will cost you money, but it is, in our professional opinion, money well-spent.
