When It Is Best To Use A Brush Hog

using a brush hog

We have been in the acreage mowing business for a number of years, and we are still surprised when someone asks us what a brush hog is, and what it is used for.  Perhaps this article will help to explain about the brush hog, a common piece of machinery for commercial mowing services.

We are Keith’s Tractor Mowing, taking care of the Fort Worth area with quality acreage mowing and other, related, large-scale cutting jobs. Call us the next time the job is too big, and you need the job done correctly.

What is a brush hog

A brush hog is an attachment to a tractor trailer and, in fact, is a separate, rotary mower. Its main purpose is to cut down vegetation which is too thick for a normal tractor mower to cut.  The blades are made from extremely-hard steel, and they are connected in such a way that they are not rigid, meaning they will conform to the terrain for a closer, truer cut.  Vegetation such as blackberry bushes, or even small saplings, are no match for the cutting power of a brush hog.

Two solid reasons to use a bush hog

The two most important reasons to use a bush hog are time-saved and efficiency.

Time-saved with brush hog

The only other alternative to using a brush hog is to use a normal tractor mower and follow behind it with a weed-eater, and that is a terribly time-consuming alternative.  Weed-eating an acre of land would, literally, take four hours or more. A brush hog can do the same job in fifteen minutes.

Efficiency

We mentioned using a tractor mower and weed-eater as an alternative, but in truth, a weed-eater would not be able to tackle thick vegetation like blackberry bushes. The weed-eater would become clogged and/or break after tackling such a job for a few feet.  The only machine tough enough to handle thick vegetation is the brush hog.

Should you do the job yourself?

Using a brush hog requires being trained on a tractor mower. There is no other way to operate a brush hog safely and efficiently. So, to answer the question of doing it yourself or not, begs the question are you trained to operate such machinery.  Renting a brush hog is not a problem; any farm implement store will have them available.  But can you safely operate it once you haul it home?

And, safety is a huge factor, one worth considering.  A brush hog is a powerful piece of machinery, one which causes physical injuries yearly across this country.  If you are not properly trained on the operation of a brush hog, you are much-better served by hiring brush hogging services from a commercial mowing company like Keith’s Tractor Mowing.  Yes, you will have to pay premium dollars for the service, but it will be done correctly and safely the first time and every time after that.
